1.4 - Glass Miracles

***** QUICK NOTICE *****
I'm making some changes to how i write further chapters of this legacy, meaning, i will be writing in 1st person from here on out. I just think this way will make the story better as it will be in the point-of-view of the heirs.
*************************

Courtney only confirmed what Joey and Kristy both said about me not going to the ball. Well, not exactly. She said i could go, but she gave me a list of chores that i had to complete by 7 o'clock if i wanted to go to the ball. She also said she wasn't going to pay for my dress, so i had to use my own money. Courtney and the sisters soon left for the stylist, leaving me to get started on the chores. I mopped the floor, i vacuumed the carpet, i did the laundry, i cleaned the dishes from breakfast, i made lunch for when Courtney and the sisters return...That only made a small dent in the list.
I groaned. "How am i going to finish all of this by 7 o'clock? There's no way..." I wiped a tear from my eye. What if i don't go? I shook my head. No. I'm going to go, i just have to work harder.
Courtney, Kristy, and Joey came home to the sandwiches i made for them. They all dug in to eat, and I headed out into town. One of my chores was to pick up everyone's dresses from the dry cleaners, and i figured i would stop at the stylist and buy myself an affordable dress.
While i was in the taxi, i took out my cell phone and called Grant. It seemed weird that he didn't tell me about this, considering we've been seeing each other for a while. Maybe he doesn't want me to go. Maybe he doesn't want people to be seeing him with some poor girl. I wiped those thoughts from my mind and focused on the phone.

Hey, this is Grant Davidson. If you're looking for my father, his office phone is 490-238-5208. If you were looking for me, i'm either at work or i'm not at the phone at the moment, please leave your name and number and a message and i will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you.
My head fell against the carseat as i put the phone back in my pocket. That's right, he's at work today. I closed my eyes the rest of the ride over to the stylist.

There was a long line of girls waiting in line at the stylist. most of them were looking for haircuts and makeovers, i was able to skip past the line and start looking for my dress. There were only a few girls in the clothing section looking for dresses, and they seemed to know what they wanted to get right away. I wasn't so lucky. I had a budget of everything Courtney didn't take away when i came home with dishwashing money, which still wasn't much to buy a dress.
Everything was so expensive...These dresses were all 700$ and above, these were the dresses i needed to get into the ball. Girls came and went, picking out their dresses so fast, and then taking off. I was in the store for about 45 minutes, and i still couldn't afford ANY of these dresses.
I groaned. "Why is this place so expensive?!"
I heard a voice come up behind me. "Do you need any help?"

I jumped slightly. I didn't expect anyone to walk up to me. I turned behind me and noticed a woman who looked about my age. She looked like a normal girl my age, except for her strange heart tattoos on her left cheek.
"Oh no, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to say that out loud...i guess i'm just a little frustrated." I stumbled over the words.
The girl gave a kind smile. "Don't worry about it. Well, i happen to work here. Could i help you find something?"
"I don't know, i'm just looking for a dress for this ball that's happening tonight."
     The girl chuckled. "Who isn't?"
I slowly nodded. "I'm working with kind of a low budget, and none of these dresses are within my price range..."
"I see." the girl said. "Why go to a stupid ball anyway?"
I lowered my head. "Normally i wouldn't care about this sort of thing, but this guy that i really care about is going to be there, and i want to be with him...I guess i just wanna be Cinderella." I said with a pause. "Just for one night, where i can feel like a princess and i wont have to deal with any obnoxious stepsisters or a terrible step mother."
I could see the sympathy in the girls eyes. She looked at me for a few seconds, then sighed, hands joined in front of her. "Listen, i don't normally do this, but i want you to take this."
She leaned next to me and handed me a Visa Debit card. "There's about 1000$ on that card. Take it, buy yourself a dress you want, then maybe get your hair done and buy some makeup. Go to that ball tonight and have the night of your life." She said with a smile.
I hesitated, and stepped back a little. "Oh, no. I don't think i could take your money from you so i could spend it on me. It wouldn't be right."
"Please don't worry about it. It's not my money. This stylist funds beauty pagents for little girls, and this was one of the runner up prizes. They had the beauty pageant and then decided to keep the runner up prizes because the kids wouldn't know the difference." She said with an angry look. "Ridiculous. They don't deserve this money, but you do. You're a good person, i can see that well enough. Take the money and use it wisely." she said with a wink.

With that, she left me with the money and walked back into the makeover room.

I couldn't believe it: A complete stranger just gave me 1000$. I was ecstatic. I jumped up and down with excitement as i started looking for the dress i wanted.

I walked away with a new dress, a bag full of makeup, and a new hairdo. I picked up the drycleaning on the way home, and i started working on the chores again when i got back. i was able to hide all of my things, so they wouldn't ask me about it. when they asked about my hair, i told them i just put it up a different way. That was enough to keep them quiet.
The rest of my day consisted of finishing the rest of the chores that Courtney gave me. However, at 4 o'clock, four hours before the dance, Courtney gave me another list of chores, just as long as the first one. I gritted my teeth in anger. Courtney is doing whatever she can to stop me from going to that ball. Well, she can do whatever she wants. i'm going to that ball.

At around 7 o'clock, everyone got their dresses on, their makeup ready, and their hair ready. I couldn't help but watch as the sisters looked almost exactly alike. Joey was wearing almost all green, and Kristy was going for a darker look, but if i was colorblind, It would be hard telling the difference between the two.
"So sorry you couldn't make it to the dance, sweetie. We'll tell you all about it when you get back." Courtney said, before walking out the door.
"We'll tell the prince you said 'Hi'" Joey sneered as the sisters followed their mother, and slamming the door in my face.
I couldn't help but smile. It was time to get ready for the ball.

I made sure to put my makeup on beforehand. i put my new blue dress on (the stylist said it complimented my hair color nicely.) and i fixed my hair up a little as it got messier as the day pressed on. I slipped the new sapphire necklace i had gotten around my neck, and looked at my self in the mirror. i couldn't help but gape. i looked beautiful.
My plan was to get in the taxi and stop close enough to the beach to walk up and not have my stepmother see me. That way, i could find Grant and be by his side the entire evening. I hopped in the taxi and instructed the driver to drop me off a couple blocks away. He did as he was told, and i paid him 15 bucks, the last of my money. He dropped me off at the hospital, and i started walking to the beach. I could barely contain my excitement, i was almost skipping down the street. Finally, i'm going to be with the guy i love...
I was almost to the beach, it was about 8:30 now. I was rounding the corner to the path to the beach, when Joey and Kristy stood in my way. "We knew you'd try to come anyway. We apparently know you too well." Joey scoffed.
"Look, Joey, i'm going. There's nothing either of you can do to stop me from going, so i suggest you just move out of the way and let me leave." I said with a scowl on my face.
Joey's face twisted in anger. Kristy nervously looked from Joey to Me and tried to stop Joey. "Listen, let's just go to the dance. Who cares if she goes or not?"
Joey turned on Kristy. "I WANT THE MAYOR'S SON TO BE MINE. Meredith doesn't deserve him. Now, she needs to remember who's in charge."
for some reason, i snapped. It was like the feather on the camel's back. all of the things that these two have done to me suddenly added up until i couldn't take it anymore. I had to start fighting back.
"No one is EVER going to love you, Joey. They may try and hook up with you like Aaron did, but no one will love you as long as you treat everyone else like shit!"
I felt a hard sting as Joey smacked me across the face.
Joey slapped me over and over, causing me to push her away. She kneed me in the stomach. The wind got knocked out of me as i doubled over, clutching my stomach in pain. tears ran down my cheeks, causing my mascara to run. Joey grabbed onto my hair, lifting me up off the ground. She grabbed my necklace and pushed me back on the ground, breaking it.
Joey turned to Kristy. "Help me with this."
Kristy grinned and pulled me up. She and Joey started tearing up my dress, ripping it into pieces. the two of them pushed me back on the ground and left me in my underwear.
Joey leaned down next to me. "This is all you will ever be. You don't get the guy. You don't get to be Cinderella. Because all you are and all you will ever be is the maid."
Tears were streaming down my face now. I let out uncontrollable sobs as Joey and Kristy ran off and went back to the beach.
I sat there for a long time. Minutes were passing, but to me, it felt like hours. there was no way i could go looking like this.
Joey and Kristy had taken everything. They ruined all of the hard work i had put into making this night perfect for me and Grant. It was all over. I'd return home, and stay as the maid for those three forever. I would never be able to escape this. I put my hands in my face as i continued to sob.
"Well, that was a waste of 1000$, huh?" I turned behind me. It was the girl from before. The girl at the stylist.
 "That was pretty rude."
I started laughing, suprisingly enough. It WAS pretty rude. I looked behind her, and saw what looked like a pair of...wings?
the girl caught me staring and looked behind her. "Oh yeah, this probably looks pretty bizarre."
     "Who are you?" I asked.
The girl thought for a moment. "That's a pretty long story...Let's just say, for the sake of time, that i'm your fairy godmother."
     I held back a chuckle.
"Yeah, it sounds crazy, but just bear with me." She said. "So what now?"
I was really suspicious of the sparkly wings behind her, but i was too upset to care. "I don't know. Go home, i guess."
Godmother gave me a look. "Really? after all of that, you're just going to give up?"
I shrugged. "What else can i do?"
"You can go back there and have the night of your life!"
"I can't go there looking like this! Look at me! Look what they did to me!" I yelled. Tears were flowing freely. I could feel them fall off my cheek and hit my feet.
"Calm down, hon. It'll all be fine. I'll tell you what i'll do for you," She began. "I'm going to make you look like the most beautiful girl in the world. Do you want that?"
I slowly nodded. "Look up at the sky." she told me. I obeyed and directed my gaze towards the stars. the stars. that was what we were doing when we first met. we were watching the stars.
i looked back to godmother, and she waved her hands in front of me. blue sparkles trailed from her palms, and suddenly, i could feel me being lifted off of the ground, "close your eyes," she said. I did as she told me.
When i opened my eyes, i looked like a completely different person. My hair was much longer, and it was tied with a ribbon. My necklace was restored, and my dress was much more beautiful than i could have ever imagined it to be.

"Thank you so much!" I said.
"Hold on a minute, sweetie. This isn't a forever thing. When the clock hits midnight, the spell will be broken, and you will go back to being your original self. Keep that in mind, okay?"
I quickly nodded, and started making my way to the beach.

when i arrived, There were so many people at the beach. It looked like the entire town might be there. Everyone was talking or dancing, and eyes started turning as soon as i stepped on the beach. I spotted Grant in the crowd. He was talking to some people by the bar. I slowly started walking towards him, and people cleared out of the way. When i got close enough, Grant finally turned his head. His face lit up when he saw me, and he excused himself to find me.
People made space for us as we finally joined hands. I looked into his eyes as he looked into mine. "I can't believe you made it." He said.
"Of course i did. I love you, Grant." I said. He smiled and took my hand. "May i have this dance?"
I seemed to forget all about what transpired right before coming to the beach. All of my troubles melted away. I forgot about Courtney, Kristy and Joey, My "Fairy Godmother," and everyone else around me. All i cared about was Grant. Nothing else mattered.
We never broke away from each other, we stayed dancing the entire night. People watched us at first, but then went back to their business. I think i even noticed Courtney saw us dancing, but didn't recognize me or Grant, so went back to schmoozing the other guests.

That night was the best night of my entire life.

Obviously, I heard about how the dance was early in the morning from Courtney. She talked all about how she met this guy there who seemed to like her. Kristy and Joey talked about how they hung out with Aaron and his brother Alex the entire time. Suprisingly, Neither Joey nor Kristy told Courtney about what happened that night. Courtney just assumed I stayed home, which was good. I don't wanna be in hot water with Courtney.
While i was cleaning up breakfast, I heard a knock on the door. I opened it, and Grant walked in.
"Grant?" I was completely shocked, i did not expect him to come by my house.
Kristy and Joey both turned their heads in shock. "Why are you here?" Joey asked.
"I came to talk to Meredith." He said. "Meredith, I know we haven't known each other for a long time. I know we've just gotten to know each other, but regardless, i feel like i know everything i need to know about you. I was hesitant at first to start a relationship again, but i am so glad i did. I got to meet you. I love you, Meredith Villiers, and I will love you until the day I die. Will you marry me?"
I covered my hands over my mouth as i started screaming. "YES YES YES!!!" I screamed as i started jumping up and down.
I held my hand out as he slid the ring over my finger. The perfect fit. The ring shone a bright blue color. The same color as my dress.
I screamed and jumped in his arms. I couldn't believe it, Grant and I were getting married. This was the best thing that could ever happen.
"I love you, Meredith."
"I love you too, Grant."
